Corrosion Status and Theoretical Research

    The total global number of corrosion damaged metal tubules, equipment and materials is about one third of total global steel product yearly as per global statistics, namely, the loss is 8×107 tons of total 8×108 tons, this is bigger than the max number that Bao Steel can produce yearly, and the direct annual loss from corrosion in Oil & gas industry is as high as one billion RMB dollars.
    There are more than 20 thousand piercing holes caused by corrosion in various transporting pipeline per year in the eastern oil fields, and more than 400 km of pipes have to be replaced each year. The transporting pipeline were pierced only 43 days after putting into use in Henan oil field, and had to be replaced twice in one year~ A newly built waste water treatment plant in Shengli had pierced pipes within three month after putting into use and had to be shut down for repair after 13 month.
The natural gas transporting pipeline exploding and blasting accidents caused by corrosion in Sichuan oil fields was up to 83 times during 1971 to 1986, the economic damage and loss was up to 600 million.

 Pipe corrosion in oil &gas fields features: gas, water and hydrocarbon present at same time and flow through at a high speed in the HPHT environment. The primary corrosion media are H2S, CO2, Cl- and H2O, which H2S, CO2 are reagents, H2O is carrier and C1- is activator. Corrosion types can be classified into flow induced corrosion, erosion, cavity corrosion, stress corrosion, crevice, bimetal corrosion or interacting by

several types at mean time. Activities of all kind of corrosions will intensify with the increasing of water content, the corrosion is mild when water is lower than 30% during the beginning of well producing life, and severe corrosion will present with higher water content after 3-4 years of producing, and pipes will be damaged with 30-50% water within 1-2 years. Corrosions intensify with increasing temperature too, especially between 50℃-90℃ and through the depth section of 1500m to 4000m.
